Fire Rated Secondary Glazed Windows
Installation
It is most important that the secondary glazing windows
are measured and installed correctly. Precise measurements
should be taken width first followed by the height,
it is important to measure both width and height at
more than one point in order to ascertain any discrepancies
within the masons openings, and also check that the
openings are square and plumb to ensure the windows
will easily install within the opening. We would recommend
that tight sizes be offered to allow for the correct
expansion tolerances to be made before manufacturing.
All secondary glazing windows are delivered from the
factory complete with a low tack tape which can be removed
after installation and a plastic bubble wrap film which
must be removed before installation.
Prior to installation it is important to ensure the
rebates to the window openings are of the same or higher
fire rating as the secondary glazing units, and that
the material used in the construction of the wall will
be able to carry the weight of the windows and allow
a suitable steel fixing method.
N.B only steel fixings should be used;
plastic wall plugs are not acceptable.
We would recommend the use of self drilling steel bolts
or expanding anchor bolts into masonry or steel screws
into a suitably fire rated timber studded walling system.
The windows should be installed into the required position
ensuring that they are plumb and level and packed with
steel shims to ensure that the frames do not move when
the fixings are tightened firmly home. During the initial
levelling process it is very important to ensure that
the operation of the sash windows is checked to ensure
that the windows close squarely and that all the seals
are working properly. All espagnolette locking mechanisms
and flush bolts are factory fitted and there operation
is critical to maintaining the fire rating.
Once installed in a satisfactory manner, the perimeter
gaps should be filled with intumescent mastic and cleaned
down whilst still wet to a smooth finish where the frame
and mastic meet with the walling system. Any large gaps
or holes may be suitably stopped with a fire resisting
mineral wool to suit the screens fire rating.
We would strongly recommend the use of 6mm Pyrocet glass
for the windows, as this product is suitable for 30/0
and 60/0 installations, and is a clear non-wired fire
resistant glass.
As with the steel windows, the installation of the glass
is very important, and the manufacturers instructions
should be adhered to at all times, in particular:-
- Avoid all glass to metal contact.
- The glass must remain free from constraint.
- Edge cover-10 to 14mm (max).
- Lateral clearance must allow for the use of
specified glazing tapes for the system in use, consult
the manufacturer for details.
- Place the glass on non-combustible setting blocks
of hardwood or equivalent (shore hardnessA75).
- Ensure the edge cover is even on all edges.
- The rebates must be dry and free from aggressive
products i.e. acids, organic solvents.
- Glazing materials must be compatible with Pyrocet
glass: use only neutral sealants, containing no acids,
oils or organic solvents.
- The framing system should be drained and ventilated
to avoid prolonged glass/water contact.
- Install very carefully, taking care not to damage
the edges of the glass.
- Glass and frame will need to be suitably “capped
off” with silicone sealant in accordance with
our drawings to prevent the ingress of water between
the frame and glass.
- Consult the manufacturer for details on necessary
allowances to accommodate glass expansion when subject
to a fire.
When storing and transporting the glass the following
information must be adhered to:
- Pyrocet fire resistant glass has a surface coating
to both faces. It is important that paper, or other
soft material when being stored separate the panels.
- Pyrocet glass is a toughened glass product.
Particular care should be taken that edges/corners are
protected from contact with sharp or other hard surfaces.
- Store in a dry, ventilated place.
- The glass should be supported over its full
height and width.
- Cover the feet and back of the glass supports
with felt.
- Incline the back of the support between 150mm
and 250mm
- No more than 20 panels per stack.
Glazing instructions for this product must be followed.
